Tinea capitis

Tinea capitis known by many names such as “ringworm of the hair”, “ringworm of the scalp” is a cutaneous fungal infection (dermatophytosis) of the scalp.

Usually, they are single or multiple patches of hair loss, sometimes with a ‘black dot’ pattern that may be accompanied by inflammation, scaling, pustules, and itching. Uncommon in adults, tinea capitis is predominantly seen in pre-pubertal children, more often boys than girls.

Worldwide, the fungus Microsporum Audouinii is a very common cause of ringworm, but increasingly Trichophyton tonsurans can also cause tinea capitis, especially in the US and Latin American countries.
